We had a great trip to Tonopah and Goldfield, Nevada. The highlight was a private tour of Florence Mine by the mine’s owner Jon, and meeting Honey, his donkey mascot. He is committed to maintaining the history of the site despite several offers from mining companies to buy the property. They would strip mine the area and destroy all the historic structures. We visited Round Mountain north of Tonopah and saw what that would look like. The old town is completely gone, buried in tailings.
We also visited Belmont which has a beautiful old county courthouse and jail as well as other artifacts. It was worth the trip to explore. Manhattan, on the other hand, did not have any impressive old buildings, just lots of modern run-down trailers. Stateline to the south was also worth the visit. Watch for our 2026 trail run and trip calendar coming out in January.
